Makerere Intellectuals Kampala – Kasawo Campus (M.I.K S.S Kasawo) successfully conducted its annual prefectorial elections on Monday, 15th June 2026, in an exercise that closely mirrored Uganda’s national electoral procedures.
The election brought together students from different classes to elect their leaders for various prefectural positions. The exercise was organized by the school administration with the aim of promoting leadership, democracy, responsibility, and active participation among learners.
In a remarkable display of civic education, students were assigned different electoral roles similar to those used in national elections. Some students served as polling assistants, while others acted as security constables responsible for maintaining order at polling stations. Returning officers were also appointed to supervise the voting process and ensure transparency during the counting and declaration of results.
Voting commenced in the morning and proceeded smoothly throughout the day. Students lined up patiently to cast their votes for candidates contesting various posts, including Head Prefect, Deputy Head Prefect, Academic Prefect, Entertainment Prefect, Sports Prefect, and other leadership positions.
The election process was peaceful, orderly, and free from any major incidents. School authorities praised students for demonstrating maturity, discipline, and respect for democratic principles during the exercise.
After the close of polling, votes were counted under the supervision of the appointed election officials. The much-anticipated results were released later in the evening, attracting excitement and anxiety among candidates and voters alike.
Celebrations erupted among successful candidates and their supporters as winners were announced. However, as is common in every democratic contest, some candidates and their supporters were disappointed by the outcomes. Despite the mixed emotions, students generally accepted the results in good spirit, reflecting the school’s commitment to fairness and unity.
Commenting on the exercise through a teachers’ communication channel, one teacher applauded the electoral process, saying:
“Good afternoon Sir. Our school election was fair and credible. It was transparent because we showed empty boxes, counted with agents watching, and gave results immediately. Teachers were neutral and handled the register and ballot papers well, so students trusted the process. It was also organized – we started on time, no materials ran out, and results came the same day. So I conclude the prefects elected are the true choice of students.”
The statement reflects the confidence that both teachers and students had in the electoral process and highlights the commitment of the school administration to uphold integrity, transparency, and accountability.
As the newly elected prefects prepare to assume office, the school community looks forward to a productive term under their leadership and service.
